The Ascendance Series is a YA fantasy book series by Jennifer A. Nielsen. The series has overall themes of secrecy and hidden identities. It is set in a general Medieval European time and place, with kingdoms, royalty, pirates, and wars.
The concept of secrecy is incorporated through a primarily black cover design, with color included in only a few elements to differentiate which book it is. The different textures of the embossing and foiling make the design decipherable, but still hidden. The patterns are taken from Medieval designs, and a symbol from each book is also featured on each cover.
