The Ascendance Series is a YA fantasy book series by Jennifer A. Nielsen. The series has overall themes of secrecy and hidden identities. It is set in a general Medieval European time and place, with kingdoms, royalty, pirates, and wars.
The concept of secrecy is incorporated through a primarily black cover design, with color included in only a few elements to differentiate which book it is. The different textures of the embossing and foiling make the design decipherable, but hidden. The patterns are taken from Medieval designs, and a symbol from each book in also featured on each cover.
